What these gentlemen don't know is that this song was originally sung by a black opera singer, Todd Duncan. Covered by hundreds of performers, the song was already a classic when Bobby Hatfield (singing above) covered it in 1965. The song, originally written for a 1954 film titled "Unchained," was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1956 and was sung at the Oscars by Harry Belafonte. The song got a second life when the version above by the Righteous Brothers was used in the hit movie "Ghost" in 1990. It is now the best known version today.
